What Can I Make With What I Have? A 5-Minute Method for Tonight

Most "nothing to eat" moments are really "nothing obvious to eat" moments. If you have a protein or two, a few vegetables and something starchy, you almost always have a dinner. Here is the method home cooks use to find it fast.

1. Take stock in 60 seconds

Open the fridge, freezer and pantry and write down (or photograph) what you see. Group it loosely:

  • Proteins: eggs, chicken, mince, tofu, beans, lentils, canned tuna, cheese
  • Vegetables and fruit: anything fresh, frozen or canned
  • Base: rice, pasta, noodles, bread, tortillas, potatoes, oats
  • Flavour: onion, garlic, sauces, stock cubes, spices, lemons, herbs

2. Pick the thing that needs using first

Start with whatever is closest to going off: the half bag of spinach, the cooked rice from Sunday, the chicken that expires tomorrow. Building dinner around it saves money and takes a decision off your plate.

3. Choose a format, not a recipe

Formats are flexible templates that work with almost anything:

  • Stir-fry or fried rice: protein + any veg + rice or noodles + soy sauce
  • Frittata or omelette: eggs + any veg + cheese
  • Pasta: base + garlic + veg + something creamy, tomatoey or oily
  • Soup: onion + stock + veg + beans or leftover meat
  • Tacos, wraps or quesadillas: tortillas + protein + something crunchy
  • Sheet-pan bake: chopped veg + protein + oil + spices at 200°C / 400°F

4. Fill gaps with swaps, not shopping

No cream? Use milk plus a spoon of butter, or pasta water and cheese. No fresh onion? Use onion powder or a leek. No lemon? A splash of vinegar adds the same brightness. Only shop if a missing item is truly central to the dish.

5. Or let a photo do the thinking

FridgeChef does steps 1 to 4 for you: snap one or two photos of your fridge or pantry, fix the ingredient list in a few taps, and get three dinner ideas sorted by cook time, each with step-by-step instructions and a short list of anything you are missing.

How do I find a recipe from ingredients I have?

List your ingredients (or photograph them), choose one that needs using first, then pick a flexible format such as a stir-fry, pasta, soup or frittata. A tool like FridgeChef can suggest complete recipes from a photo.
